Let’s talk about our relationship.
I’m gonna write out my journey into wanting to be here again.
I’ve been distant from you for the last year and specifically avoided you for the last two months. I had a, let’s say, a deep psychic shift in the summer of 2018 and have been recollecting myself since then...and found I couldn’t really engage here until I was grounded again.
I joined in 2009 to see what “people who make art” do here while I was working on my MFA. I learned ALOT from @AmandaPalmer and @Kimboekbinder who were both being social media wizards. (Double shoutout to Kim whose “Noise Witch” album/persona inspired my Tw name “Art Witch”)
....Twitter as a tech co. isn’t perfect, but I’ve found good networks of thinkers here I enjoy very much. And at the moment I want somewhere to talk about my art process and share pix of my work as an artist at Jackson Square in New Orleans.
Before my social media fast my primary sharing was on Instagram. I committed to social media when I began working as a street artist on Pirates Alley in 2012. IG was a delightful way to share pictures but I became disenchanted with it once facebook instituted the algorithm.
I never really liked FB as a company or a website. I tried a few times to be there but its an overwhelming experience for me. I tapped out officially in 2016 and I am deleting my account for good this week.
After the dumpster fire of 2016 I learned to use social media to listen to people talking deeper way. Thank you @crookedmedia for helping me to reign in my civic sanity and teaching me a lot about political processing and @susunweed for preaching truth and green witch wisdom.
At that time I was sharing my art online via my blog/newsletter. My art had changed and I was making bigger pieces and working a few days a week doing chair massage in a local store. The more physical work meant I had less energy for the micro processing of social media.
And then I moved across town right after NOLA’s Jazzfest in May 2018 and ran smack into a bunch of huge personal changes at once, some good, some less so, but all enough to make me realize I had to retreat, recover, and reconfigure some deep parts of myself.
...And as this summer heat starts to burn off of New Orleans I find my heart excited again for the work I am doing and feel glad to be in the world sharing it. Cause life is fucking beautiful and I’m incredibly grateful for the good wisdom I see all around.
So, I want to enjoy social media as part of my buisness again. I’ve found recently that twitter is kind of enough for me, so here I am for as long as I am committed to make content for this here internet.
It helps that I’ve also carved out a place for a real writing practice during my time away from social media sharing...so the work of making text for the internet is helping me grow my writing muscles to prepare for some larger projects.
...sometime in the next few days I’m going to write up about all the projects I have had simmering on my back burner that I am about to manifest.
Thanks, as always, for your attention.
