Portraits of Rivers is series of paintings in which I explore my fascination with journeying through a landscape as an act of self-inquiry, like going on a vision quest or pilgrimage to a sacred site. The rivers are depicted like they are tuning forks echoing across the surface of the Earth. A life long fascination with rivers crystallized for me when I moved to New Orleans in 2007 and got to feel what it was like to live with the Mississippi River as my neighbor. I began this series of paintings as my MFA project, “Rivers”, at the California Institute of Integral Studies from which I graduated in 2012. This body of work is a celebration of our ecological systems as an interconnected whole and a reminder that our physical, psychological and spiritual bodies are embedded in a relationship to the natural world.
Beautiful Bodies are acrylic canvas paintings of skeletons with hearts offering the meditation of “Be In Your Body and See with Your Heart”. In this series skeletons symbolize our essential connection to nature and our ancestors and the heart is a reminder of our capacity for nurturing relationships. In my color palate black references wisdom, white symbolizes interconnection, and red radiates passion.
They are part of the artistic tradition of “memento mori,” or macabre celebrations of life and death. You can find examples of this iconography from the earliest neolithic creations through to our modern art history. In my compositions I primarily use layers of black, thin washes of color, a variety of dots and lines combined with minimal gestures of realism.
